Paul Tanner became interested in making prosthetic eyes, ears, and noses when a relative lost an ear while being treated for cancer. As an artist with a fascination in science, Paul developed a passion for anaplastology (the art and science of creating artificial anatomy). His dream of helping people with his unique mindset and skillset lives on after 25 years.
Services Provided
Cleaning/Polishing/Resurfacing
Is your prosthesis dull, irritating, or itchy? Do you get a lot of discharge? You should consider getting a high quality polish to make it more comfortable!
At no extra cost, we offer a surface coating that makes your prosthesis feel “wet”, however you will need to leave your prosthesis with us for 24 hours.
Eye Prosthesis for Evisceration or Enucleation
The artificial eye is custom shaped so that your eyelids match and custom colored to match your other eye.
Scleral Shell Cover
This type of prosthesis is very thin (about the thickness of a coin) to be fit over the top of an unseeing eye. Proper fit and fabrication are imperative to the maximum comfort of the wearer.
Socket Expansion Therapy
For those born with one eye, this therapy reshapes the soft tissues in the socket. Socket expansion has the best results when you start your child when they are young.
Fun Eyes!
Do you already have a realistic prosthesis but you would like a fun eye? If your shape is good, you can mail your prosthesis and design and we can likely make anything you want!
Have Full Confidence in your Service
Paul stands by his work and is confident that he can provide you excellent service. He offers a 90 day satisfaction guarantee. If you are not satisfied with his service, you may return the prosthesis for a full refund and seek another provider.
“Paul Tanner’s work is truly life changing and inspirational. My dad has been battling a grade III/anaplastic sphenal orbital menigioma for 20+ years and recently lost his entire left eye due to a full eye exenteration to fight the tumor. He had to get half his face lifted, eye removed, and ¼ of his skull cut out and was in the hospital for 33 days with another 30 consecutive days of radiation/chemo. It’s truly impossible to put into words the amount of pain and suffering experienced in losing your face, yourself, and your identity to cancer, and my dad has been fighting this tumor for 2 decades now. The recent change has been devastating with having to get his eye fully removed, and though my dad is the most resilient and silent person I know to fight through the loss of half his face to this battle, to see him go through the enormous amount of suffering and loss has been truly the most heart wrenching, painful, and heart-breaking experience of my life. I cannot express in words, the immense amount of gratitude and what a blessing it is that Paul Tanner does the work that he does- there is truly absolutely nothing in this world that compares to how life changing his work is to those who are blessed to have the opportunity to have him make them a prosthetic to help put someone’s face back together and bring about some sort of a sense of normalcy to those who are tremendously suffering. Not only that, Paul is truly an incredibly good human being at heart doing what he does for the good of others and to just generously help and give to people in desperate need of help. He is a truly talented scientist, medical professional, and artist at heart that is doing something that is making the biggest difference in someone’s life and helping them to get their life back all together that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to or be able to obtain. He has an unbeatable understanding of the art and science of the human facial anatomy and you can see it in how detailed he is in capturing the life again in his prosthetics. My dad isn’t great at communicating his feelings and then add on the language barrier on top of it, it’s difficult for him to express his gratitude, but in the process of working with Paul, it’s the first time I saw any sort of hope in my dad’s eye and expression and him tell me that Paul Tanner is truly magnificent and has made more of a difference for him in designing his eye prosthetic than any other doctor he’s worked with in his 20 year battle. It’s because Paul’s work is the only thing that has remotely helped him to feel a little more like himself again after losing half his face and his eye and will help him to feel like he can leave the house again and look at himself again and live somewhat of a normal life again. Cancer is a horrible disease and robs more than just someone’s health, it also robs identity, self-esteem, confidence, and the ability for people to live a normal life. We are incredibly lucky to have the blessing to work with Paul Tanner to help with my dad’s prosthetics, I could go on about what a great pleasure he is to work with and how you feel like he cares just as much about your family as you do and how he goes above and beyond to do anything and everything he can to help in the healing process, but words are simply not enough. If anyone is looking to have a prosthetic made, I absolutely just couldn’t recommend Paul Tanner enough to help make it for you. He simply is just the best of the absolute best at what he does and he truly does it with such compassion, understanding, and kindness. I’m looking forward to seeing my dad with his new eye and getting the opportunity to see him at his best again with his new prosthetic thanks to Paul. He is absolutely the most technically skilled and talented anaplastologist and we are just beyond grateful to have found him, he is truly making a difference in my dad’s life and in the lives of everyone he helps.” – SL
We work with many insurance plans. Are you wondering whether your insurance will cover your eye prosthesis and subsequent cleanings? Please call or text with questions.
Your medical insurance should cover the service of fabricating and polishing artificial eyes, although you may need authorization for our services. How much you pay out of pocket will depend on the business that fabricates your prosthesis and your plan benefits.
As of January 2024, we do not accept Medicaid patients although we do accept Medicare (disability & age 65+). We are in-network with several plans but not all.
Eye Prosthetics
Many people think of artificial eyes as glass eyes. However, eye prostheses are made with a clear plastic. With plastic, a three dimensional optical effect can be acheived, and a better fit can be obtained from adding or subtracting plastic as needed.
